Monday Update

I haven't pushed an update in a while, as I've been working on some longer term projects, plus preparations for yesterday's Trumpet Day at Ball State University, where we had a great time showing off the SPM to trumpet players from BSU and surrounding areas!!

Based on feedback received at the Trumpet Day demonstration, today I've made a couple of updates to the messaging features of SPM:

Teachers and Students: Let's Communicate!

Today I'm excited to announce an important new feature: Communication Notes between Teachers and Students!

Part of my ongoing project of adding more lesson teaching functionality to the website, this feature will really help teachers guide theirs students' practicing during the time between lessons!

Keep reading for instructions on how to use this great new feature!

New Improved Stats Panel and More!

It's been a busy week here in the SPM Studio! I'm excited to unveil our new, bolder look! The site now has more vivid colors, makes better use of screen space, and looks better on small devices!

There are two new features that are most important in this update:

Some Brand New Features!

International Trumpet Guild Conference

We're having a great time sharing Dr. Flegg's Structured Practice Method with trumpet players from around the world at the International Trumpet Guild Conference in Columbus, Ohio this week.

It's been a great week filled with reconnecting with old friends and making new ones. Pictured here at left are members of the Wayne State University Trumpet Ensemble, our original team of beta-testers, who stopped by the booth following their outstanding performance of Eric Morales' Metallic Fury. I feel very fortunate that all three of my major college trumpet instructors (Charlie Schlueter, David Hickman, and Rich Illman) were here and stopped by the SPM booth for a visit.

We're Live!

At long last, we've finished our beta-test phase and the website is 100% live!

I'd like to personally thank all who helped with the beta-testing phase of development. As promised, your accounts will continue free of charge until the end of 2015!

In other news, we've been hard at work preparing for our first-ever trade show appearance next week at the International Trumpet Guild Conference in Columbus, Ohio!

New Feature: Time Tracking

I'll write more about this in the future, but for now I want to make sure the word gets out that the SPM now tracks practice time.

Features for Teachers

I realized the other day that so far I've written nothing in this blog about using the Structured Practice Method as a teacher. There's also, so far, nothing anywhere on the main web page introducing the teacher-oriented features of the application.

This is a bit of an oversight, especially considering the fact that its usefulness for teaching is one of the main reasons I developed the SPM!

What is Dr. Flegg's Structured Practice Method?

Just what exactly is Dr. Flegg's Structured Practice Method, anyway? This is a question I've needed to answer quite a few times over the past year. It seems, on the surface, like it should be easy. And yet it's not. Even for me, and I invented it!

Of course, that's not entirely true. I can give you a quick one sentence answer right here:

Some Great Advice from Joey Tartel

I subscribe to a number of music and music practice related websites. Occasionally I'll post a "re-blog" of content that I think relates particularly well to Dr. Flegg's Structured Practice Method. This is one of those occasions!

How to Write an Effective Journal Entry

When I first started keeping a practice journal, my entries would often look like this:
Practiced band music really hard today. 1pm to 1:15pm.
On the surface, this looks like a good entry. It's factual information about what I did. When we think of journals, we usually think of them as a place to record information about what we did, or thought, or whatever. They're a storage tool.
How exciting! A book where I can keep track of how much I practiced, and maybe what I practiced. Oh, boy!!
And this helps me how, exactly?

An Introduction

Hello, World!!

Hello! Dr. Flegg here! Welcome to the blog for my Dr. Flegg's Structured Practice Method website. The post below originally aired on my personal blog, but now that we've got the official up and running, I though it'd be a good time to re-post! It is my hope that reading this post will help give you a little insight into the making of
