Summer Fun

Warm weather has finally arrived here in Michigan! As a freelance musician and adjunct college music instructor, much of my work grinds to a halt around this time of year. The orchestras I perform with are off until the Fall, school is out, and for me it's time to dig in and put some quality time in on the Structured Practice Method!

I haven't updated the blog in a couple of months, which in internet time is the equivalent of about 5 years, so I though I should write and let you all know what's happening in the world of SPM.

The first big news is that we will not be exhibiting at the International Trumpet Guild conference this year. This will be the first ITG conference I have missed in several years. It looks like it'll be a great conference, but for a variety of reasons, it didn't work out for us to make the trip. We very much hope to be at next year's conference!

We will be getting our fix of conferences in this year, however. In December, look for us at the massive Midwest Clinic in Chicago! We're very excited to be able to bring the SPM to the thousands of musicians who will be in attendance there. I'm looking at a few other conferences that are coming up both before and after Midwest as well. I'll post details here as information becomes available.

SPM Updates Ahead

  • Lesson Notes & Assignments - I've actually already made some changes to the lesson assignments and notes features. I'm happy with the way they're set up now, and over the coming weeks I'll be making just a few minor tweaks to the way things look, how they're described in the application, and in the user guide.
  • Offline capabilities - My goal for this is to make the SPM website work better with sketchy internet connections - meaning that if your connection drops while you're in the practice room, you won't even notice it. SPM will just keep on chugging along, and all your data will sync up when your connection goes back up. This turns out to be a very difficult task. I've done a lot of research and have a plan in place to get this done. However, at this time I can't give an estimated release date or timeline. Just know that it's coming, and watch this space for news!
  • Next up will be the dedicated mobile apps. These will bring the true "offline first" capability that so many of you have been asking for, along with some extra features, like the ability to record audio in your practice notes, and a built-in metronome. As you might imagine, this is a big undertaking, and it's going to take some time to get it done right. Watch for the mobile apps sometime in 2017, most likely. Naturally, if I can get them done early, you'll see it here first! :-)

In the meantime, all the great Structured Practice Method goodness you've come to rely on will be there working for you all summer long, so there's no excuse for you not to practice! ;-)
